Former Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis was officially hired Tuesday by Arkansas. The hire was reported by several outlets last week, including footballscoop.com, which also said former A&M defensive back Ron Cooper has joined the Arkansas staff. Chavis has been an SEC defensive coordinator for 23 straight seasons, the last three at A&M. He was at LSU from 2009-14 and before that his alma mater, Tennessee.

Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher couldn't land the losing defensive coordinator in the Citrus Bowl, so he hired the winner, Notre Dame's Mike Elko, someone he's also familiar with from their Atlantic Coast Conference battles.

Texas A&M wide receiver and return specialist Christian Kirk declared for the NFL draft on Tuesday, hopeful to continue a trend of Aggie underclassmen being selected in the first round.

Texas A&M senior safety Armani Watts has been ruled out for the Belk Bowl after reinjuring his ribs in the Aggies' season finale against LSU, according to a program spokesman.

Watts might not play: Texas A&M senior strong safety Armani Watts suffered an upper rib injury earlier this season and aggravated it against LSU, leaving him questionable for Friday’s Belk Bowl against Wake Forest.

The best way to pick the Belk Bowl would be to flip a coin, preferably a silver dollar since Texas A&M is all about the best. Bowl games in which the winner doesn’t have a chance to crack the Top 25 are almost impossible to pick. Throw in a coaching change and it’s even harder.
