Texas A&M assistant baseball coach Will Bolt was named the head baseball coach at Nebraska, the Nebraska athletic department announced Friday.
Bolt, a Nebraska alumnus who played for the Cornhuskers, completed his fifth season as an assistant coach under Rob Childress, focusing on the offensive game plan, infield defense and coaching third base. He will become the 24th head coach in Nebraska history.
“The opportunity to come back home to Nebraska and lead the Husker baseball program is such a blessing and honor for my family and me,” Bolt said in a statement. “It is such an exciting time in Husker athletics with the foundation laid by Bill Moos within the athletic department and the success Coach Erstad and staff have had on the field.”
The hiring was first reported by Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.com.
The 39-year-old Bolt will sign a five-year contract worth $300,000 annually. He will be formally introduced Thursday.
“I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity for Will, his wife Lauren and his entire family as he goes back to his alma mater for his dream job,” Childress said in a statement. “I will be forever thankful to Will and his family for all they’ve done for Texas A&M baseball the last five seasons, as well as in 2006 and ’07. His leadership helped us accomplish many great things on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He is going to field a team that is going to be relentless, and he will build something special at the University of Nebraska. I look forward to seeing the great things he accomplishes, adding to his legacy in Lincoln.”
Bolt served as a volunteer assistant coach at A&M for the 2006-07 season.
A&M finished the 2015 and 2016 seasons in the top 25 nationally in batting average under Bolt, peaking at .311 in 2016. With Bolt on staff, the Aggies went 180-75 over the last five seasons, winning one Southeastern Conference tournament title and three NCAA regionals and reaching the College World Series in 2017.
Bolt played for Nebraska from 1999-2002, when Childress served as an assistant coach under Dave Van Horn. Bolt also worked as a volunteer assistant at Nebraska in 2005 and worked under head coach Darin Erstad as an associate head coach with the Cornhuskers from 2012-14. From 2008-11 he served as the head coach at Texarkana College.
Erstad announced his retirement from coaching on June 3 after eight seasons with the Cornhuskers.
According to the D1Baseball.com report, Nebraska’s search for a new baseball coach included Childress and former Oregon State head coach Pat Casey.
