RUSHING

TJ Rushing has been hired by A&M as secondary coach.

Texas A&M has hired Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley to be its tight ends coach, according to multiple reports.

Coley, considered an excellent recruiter, has been at Georgia four years. He was wide receivers coach in 2016 and ’17 before being elevated to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2018. Coley was the team’s solo offensive coordinator this past season after Jim Chaney went to Tennessee.

Coley added the title of assistant head coach on Jan. 17 when Georgia head coach Kirby Smart hired former NFL offensive coordinator Todd Monken to improve a unit that ranked 61st in total offense (408.1 yards per game).

TexAgs.com’s Billy Liucci was the first to report A&M had hired Coley, who turned down the Aggies two years ago to stay at Georgia. This will be the third time Coley has worked with A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher. Coley was a graduate assistant at LSU from 2003-04 when Fisher was the Tigers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Coley, who graduated from Florida State, was the Seminoles tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2008-09 and was the offensive coordinator and tight ends coach from 2010-12. Fisher was Florida State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2007-09 before becoming head coach. ESPN named Coley one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top recruiters during his time at Florida State.

Coley will replace tight end Joe Jon Finley who left for Ole Miss.

A&M on Friday officially announced hiring former Memphis assistant TJ Rushing to be secondary coach, replacing cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist who was hired by the Dallas Cowboys.

“TJ has an outstanding track record of playing, teaching and developing quality defensive backs,” Fisher said Friday in a release. “He is a tireless worker, an outstanding recruiter and he coaches with a lot of fire and enthusiasm. He will make a great addition to our coaching staff.”

The 36-year-old Rushing, who was defensive backs coach at Memphis the last two seasons, had been at Florida State for less than a month. Florida State recently hired Memphis head coach Mike Novell who brought along defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and Rushing.

Rushing’s hire was first reported by earlier this week by TexAgs.com. Rushing, who played at Stanford, also was an assistant at Northern Arizona (2014), his alma mater (2015) and Arizona State (2016-17). Rushing played five seasons in the NFL, four with Indianapolis including its Super Bowl victory in 2006. A&M on Thursday announced it had hired Wake Forest linebackers coach Tyler Santucci to replace Bradley Dale Peveto who is no longer with the program.
