Feb. 4, 2002: A&M President Ray Bowen, class of 1958, announced Bonfire would not take place again. The costs and safety concerns outweighed pride in tradition after the tragic November 1999 collapse that killed 11 students and one former student.

"My heart does not like what my brain is having to do today," Bowen said, according to The Eagle.
