Texas oilman, Aggie George P. Mitchell dies

Dec. 4, 2009: The George P. Mitchell '40 Physics Building and the George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy opened on campus.

In 2005, the Mitchells donated $35 million to Texas A&M toward the construction of the two physics buildings. George P. Mitchell founded Mitchell Energy, one of the nation's largest independent oil and gas producers. In 2002, he merged the company with Devon Energy. He is credited with helping develop the Woodlands outside of Houston and founding the Houston Advanced Research Center. He died in 2013.

Dec. 4, 1972:  Cedric Joseph set the Texas A&M record for rebounds in a game with 23. Joseph played for the Aggies from 1971 to 1975. 

Dec. 4, 2017: Jimbo Fisher was introduced as A&M's new football coach. "I understand that I come in here with great expectation," he said at a press conference. "And I say this with due diligence: Your expectations will never be greater than mine. I promise you that. We understand expectation. We live in a world of expectation. That's what we do. But our expectancy and habits of ourselves to be great will never exceed anything that's out there. We're going to be driven to be the best every day."
