June 29, 1949: R. Bowen Loftin, class of 1970 and former Texas A&M president, was born in Hearne.

As Texas A&M's 24th president, Loftin saw many changes during his tenure, most notably the move from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference.

Loftin was vice president and CEO of Texas A&M at Galveston, then interim president at the flagship campus from June 2009 to February 2010. He was officially appointed as A&M president Feb. 12, 2010, as the replacement for Elsa Murano.

He initially decided to step down from the post and return to teaching. However, before he could leave the post on Jan. 13, 2014, it was announced that Loftin would move to the University of Missouri to become chancellor.
