The season began with a loss to the No. 2 team in the country — Florida State. But the Aggies won four straight and welcomed No. 2 Nebraska for a rematch of the 1997 Big 12 title game.
Behind tough running from Jamar Toombs and stifling defense, A&M scored a 28-21 victory. The Aggies won 10 straight and clinched the Big 12 South title.
The Aggies went into the Big 12 championship game as heavy underdogs. Kansas State was ranked third in the BCS, and a UCLA loss earlier in the day meant the Wildcats were a win away from the national championship game. But the Aggies overcame a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit, and tied the game when Branndon Stewart found Sirr Parker for a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The two again connected in double overtime, and A&M shocked the Wildcats, 36-33.
Dat Nguyen won the prestigious Bednarik and Lombardi Awards. A&M earned its first BCS bowl appearance with a trip to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, but fell to Ohio State, 24-14. The team finished the year with an 11-3 record and ranked No. 11.
